During the 12th edition of FOMACO, held at the Mokhtar Ould Daddah Conference Centre in Nouakchott, BiodiverCités showcased its projects, advocacy efforts and commitment to biodiversity conservation and the promotion of local cultures.
Established in 2012, BiodiverCités develops initiatives rooted in Mauritania’s urban and coastal areas. The forum brought together more than 700 delegates, around ten ministers and representatives from West Africa, as well as experts, technical partners and civil society actors. In this context, the organisation’s participation provided an opportunity to share experiences and contribute to discussions on the sustainable and integrated management of coastal ecosystems.
At its exhibition stand, BiodiverCités presented several flagship initiatives planned for 2026–2027, including the promotion of Imraguen heritage, the Green High School for Climate initiative, efforts to strengthen Nouakchott’s resilience to flooding, the Sea Caravan and the Dar El-Emel project. These initiatives reflect a shared vision that combines environmental protection, cultural transmission and citizen engagement.
The forum also provided an opportunity to highlight the RESILAO project, which focuses on promoting Imraguen cultural heritage as a means of preserving the natural heritage of the Banc d’Arguin.
The film programme gave prominence to committed storytelling through the screening of the documentary Voices of the Ocean, produced by BiodiverCités and the Quatre et Demi association. The documentary gives a voice to five Mauritanian women engaged in ocean protection, climate justice and strengthening the resilience of coastal communities.
