Bijagós: Teachers trained to better protect the environment

From 10 to 13 December, thirty teachers from several islands of the Bijagós Archipelago took part in a training workshop on environmental education. The session was held at the Bubaque Environmental House, headquarters of the Biosphere Reserve managed by the Institute for Biodiversity and Protected Areas (IBAP) and listed as a Natural World Heritage site.

Over four days, participants strengthened their teaching and practical skills in environmental conservation, sustainable management of natural resources, and raising students’ awareness of the ecological challenges facing the archipelago.

The workshop also provided direct support to schools. A total of 1,000 illustrated notebooks, ballpoint pens, and posters on waterbirds were distributed for the benefit of students.

The initiative was led by the Regional Partnership for Coastal and Marine Conservation in West Africa (PRCM) in partnership with Wetlands Defense Organization (ODZH) and IBAP, as part of the Blue Bijagós, Rays & Sharks, and IKI projects.

The program highlights the key role of education in safeguarding one of the region’s most remarkable natural areas.
