Training of marine science students at the slusophone university of Bissau

On January 29, students in Marine Sciences at the Lusophone University of Bissau benefited from a training conference organized by the National Institute for Fisheries and Oceanographic Research (INIPO), in partnership with the PRCM Rays and Sharks Project and the Lusophone University of Bissau.

This initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the academic and scientific capacities of future professionals in Guinea-Bissau’s maritime sector. Several key topics were addressed during the session, including mangrove ecology, the biology of rays and sharks, fishing practices, the ecology of elasmobranchs in intertidal environments, and the characterization of phytoplankton in the country’s coastal waters.

The discussions enabled students to deepen their understanding of marine and coastal ecosystems while highlighting the challenges related to marine biodiversity conservation.

At the end of the presentations, participants received a training certificate along with a set of educational materials, including a poster illustrating the main threatened species of rays and sharks in Guinea-Bissau.
